Carlotta Valentin and Vincent Rivera were a happily married couple. The two worked as police officers in the 2nd precinct, in Brooklyn. In fact, that's how they met. They were partners until they fell in love and couldn't let that get in the way of the job. They got married a year after they began dating, then Carlotta announced her pregnancy just six months after that. Only a year after that, they had their second child, whom they named Melanie.
Right off the bat they knew their second kid was bound to start some trouble, and they were right. Being the middle child made Nani fight more for attention, and she sure knew how to get it. Ever since she was three years old, Nani was performing for her parents. Whether it was singing, dancing, or just being goofy, Melanie knew how to put on a show.
Nani's demeanor took a bit of a turn when her father was killed in the line of duty when she was only twelve years old. Her mother then took a job as a meter maid, and that's where she would meet her second husband just two years after her husband's death. Julian Deacon and his gaggle of children welcomed Carlotta and her kids into their Old Hill home after their marriage just a year after they began dating.
Nani wasn't thrilled about the union, at first. In fact, her mother often found her bed empty when she checked for her at night. Only to find out that she'd managed to sneak out and go to her old stomping grounds in Brooklyn. It wasn't until her friend got shot while standing mere feet away from Nani at a house party, that the girl finally realized that moving away from Brooklyn had been in her best interest.
She's come to accept Julian as her stepfather, and his children as a part of the family. Shortly after getting married, Carlotta found herself pregnant with her fourth and final child. Melanie went from being the middle child, to well, the middle child again. James had two kids of his own, both of them older than Nani. Now that the last baby had been introduced, it was back to the middle slot for Nani.
College came a little too quickly for Nani. She found herself struggling in the first year, when she was used to sailing through high school. It was even harder for her given the fact that she was miles from home and couldn't just quit when things got too hard. She was known for that fun trait when she was younger, but she had to learn how to grow out of it when she was making it on her own for college. When she graduated Chicago University with a degree in Communication, she found that she had grown quite a bit in her four years of college and she didn't want to risk it all by going back and living with her parents.
So instead of going back to her home in Connecticut, she ventured out into Illinois and got a place of her own which she now shares with her cousin. Being fresh out of college with a degree that isn't really focused on anything, it's hard to get a job. She is currently temping, going wherever the agency needs her to go. It isn't her desired mode of living, but until she figures out what she wants to do with her life it's what she's going to do.
